Summer is here and it’s the best time to get out and about with your pooch! Here are some fun summer activities to do with your best friend by your side.
3-4 mins

It’s never too late to start planning summer activities with your furry friend! From visiting the dog park to going on hikes, there are plenty of fun things that you and your pup can do together to enjoy the warm weather. Choose your activity timing carefully, we don’t want to over exert our best friend when the weather is too warm.
1. Take your dog to the beach
There’s no better way to enjoy summer than a fun-filled day of sun and sand! Your dog will love running free across the shore, digging in the sand, and chasing the waves – and so will you! We all know how much our dogs love the beach. The smell of salt in the air, the feel of sand between their paws, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore are just a few of the things that makes this place so special to them. But did you know that there are a few things you can do to make sure your dog has the best time possible at the beach?
Here are a few tips:
Make sure your dog is properly hydrated before heading to the beach. This means giving them plenty of water to drink throughout the day, and bringing along a water bowl and some extra water for them to drink while at the beach.
Bring along a fun toy for your dog to chase – bonus points if it floats! If your dog loves to swim, they’ll get some fabulous exercise retrieving a toy from the waves. If they prefer to stick to the shore, running on the sand is also fantastic for building muscle – just be careful not to over exercise your dog especially on a hot day.
Remember to pack a dog towel to dry your dog off after a splash – and one for yourself too! Nobody likes wet dog smell.
Make sure you keep an eye on your dog at all times as they can get over excited and may run off, so be sure keep them on lead when required. Many beaches will have dog restrictions at certain hours of the day during summer periods, but there are also many dog friendly beaches where dogs are allowed 24/7. Remember to check your beach regulations with the local council.
2. Go for a hike
Hiking with your dog can be a great way to bond and explore the great outdoors together, whilst getting some fresh air and exercise. Your furry friend will love exploring new trails and sniffing new smells - and you'll appreciate the companionship. It's important to make sure your pooch is up for the challenge before hitting the trails, as some dogs may not be used to walking long distances. If you're unsure, start with a shorter hike and work your way up. Once you're both ready to hit the trails, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure both of you have a safe and enjoyable time:
Bring plenty of water and snacks, especially if it's hot out. Dogs can get dehydrated quickly, so it's important to keep them hydrated.
Don’t forget a leash and collar and perhaps a harness if your dog prefers. Keeping your dog on leash will help them stay safe and under control, especially if there are other hikers or animals around. If you are hiking over more challenging terrain, a harness may be more suited to help your dog across obstacles. Our reflective harness has a handle on the back which will help you manouver your dog as needed, and reflective piping for visibility.
Be aware of your dog's energy level and take breaks as needed.
3. Have a picnic at the park
A picnic in the park is a great way to spend time with your dog. You can bring along some toys for your dog to play with, and there's plenty of room to run around. Of course, a picnic isn’t complete without some delicious snacks and refreshments for both you and your furry friend. A few of their favorite treats or a treat toy filled with peanut butter will keep them busy (and happy) while relaxing on a picnic blanket or mat.
The Weatherbeeta Gear Bag is large enough to carry all your picnic essentials plus it’s stylish and has a waterproof bottom to protect your picnic gear from wet grass!
4. Make a frozen treat for your dog
When it's hot outside and your dog is panting and begging for a treat, why not make them a frozen one! It's easy to do and they'll love you for it. There are numerous recipes for frozen dog friendly treats, but here are a few of our favourites:
- Frozen Dog Fruit Pops
Simply combine 200ml water, 3 spoonfuls of either natural or greek yoghurt, and a handful of chopped up strawberries or blueberries into an ice cube tray, ice cream mould, or muffin tin. Optional: add a dental stick or your dog’s favourite chew into the middle. Freeze. - Ice lollies
Combine bone broth, dog friendly peanut butter and natural or greek yoghurt into an ice cube tray and freeze for several hours. They'll love the cooling sensation and the tasty flavors, and you'll love knowing that you're giving them a healthy snack. - Easy Frozen Dinner
Simply freeze your dog’s favourite wet food into an ice cube tray, muffin tin, or enrichment feeder such as a lickimat or kong. If your dog eats kibble, you can mix it into some bone broth and freeze. A fun idea is filling an empty ice cream tub with water or bone broth, and mixing your dog’s regular food in, then freeze for several hours. Your dog will have a great time licking away at the ice block for his meal.
If your dog is allergic to any ingredients, simply substitute with your dog's regular food. Always ensure you provide your dog with plenty of fresh drinking water along with any treats.
